Check your cooling system
Check your cooling system
Manuel Busacca - Saturday, February 11, 2017

Manuel Automatics loves to help our clients, new and old, prevent major issues before they appear. One way of doing this is educating them on the warning signs and the way that the system works on their vehicle.

We have noticed a lot of cars are over heating this summer and thought; we can’t have our clients getting stuck in this heat! So we're taking some time out to explain how the cooling system works and what you can do to take extra care of it.

Your cooling system is one of the most important aspects of your vehicles engine system.

Your engine produces a lot heat, keeping that heat temperature down is a critical job for the cooling system. The cooling system is designed to remove heat from the engine to keep it running at optimum temperature. Your cooling system is made up of some very critical parts; the radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses and of course the coolant.

Your water pump is driven by 1 of 2 belts, your fan belt or your timing belt. The water pump moves coolant from the radiator through the engine and back to the radiator, it does this by spinning a pulley (which is driven by the belt) which moves a shaft which spins a rotary pump to move the coolant.

So now the coolant is moving around the engine we can take a step back and have a look at the radiator. The radiator is made up of small channels with gaps in between each row which the air circulates around that the coolant moves through, because the channels have the air flow this cool's the coolant so it can continue its journey around the engine. The radiator cap is designed to hold pressure in the cooling system; this is usually 8-12 psi. The pressure raises the temperature at which the coolant will boil, maintaining a stable cooling system.

The thermostat is like a tap that controls the flow of the water through the engine. If your engine is cold, you won’t need as much coolant flowing through the engine. As the Engine warms up the thermostat will open allowing more coolant to flow through the engine.

Hoses and Coolant are pretty self-explanatory. Hoses need to be flexible without being brittle. Coolant must be used when topping up the radiator, water can rust your cooling system and coolant is a special blend of things to lubricate and protect your engine.

When things go wrong, it can be deadly for your motor. If a coolant leak is left unattended it can potentially overheat the engine causing major engine damage.

The most common issues with the cooling system are:

Broken hose's: The hose can get old and brittle and have a crack or split, this allows the coolant to flow out of the cooling system. If there is no coolant in the system it simply cannot cool the engine down.

Broken belt: If the belt that spins the water pump isn't turning it isn’t spinning the water pump and therefore the coolant isn't being circulated around the engine and there for cant cool the engine.

Faulty radiator cap: If the radiator cap isn't sealing correctly and holding pressure, it allows the coolant to leak out very quickly when it warms up and builds up pressure, just like a saucepan boils over.

Water pump failure: You will hear a screeching noise or see coolant leaking out of the front of your water pump or under the car. You will most likely be able to smell burning coolant while driving down the road. You can catch this early as you will see small spots under your car after being parked overnight or possibly your temperature gauge not rising at all.

Head gasket: Your head gasket seals the cylinder head to the engine block and also seals the coolant passages. If the head gasket fails, coolant will enter the cylinder head and will turn to vapour when the engine fires. This usually happens after the car has overheated, usually caused by one of the issues above. The gasket will fail usually because the cylinder head has gotten hot and warped. You may see steam come out of your exhaust when your engine warms up.

To prevent these issues from occurring regular maintenance is required. Usually this maintenance happens when the engine is serviced.

To maintain the cooling system:

Have your belts inspected every service.

Check for coolant leaks weekly. If you find a coolant leak, call your mechanic and get your cooling system pressure tested.

Let our mechanic know when your overheating issues happen. Overheating at idle can be something different to overheating at highway speeds.

If you’re changing your water pump it is always a good idea to look at changing the timing belt.

Don't open your radiator cap while the engine is hot, there is a lot of pressure in there and if you take the cap off it can cause the boiling hot coolant to splash out at you and burn you.

Regular service by a professional technician will help maintain your cooling system as your cooling system is regularly checked.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues or think you are please don't hesitate to call us.
